Intentional Dreaming

Over the last year I have read “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor, “The book of Joy” by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, “The Intention Experiment” by Lynne McTaggart and “Think and Grow Rich for Women” by Sharon Lechter. They all have one common refrain: How we think affects the world we live in. The beliefs we carry create the life we inhabit. They have another common message, becoming intentional about your thoughts requires practice. Practice becomes habit.

I must admit that I have gotten lazy about my mind set. I am aware of this because I spend a lot of time in a place where people are angry and upset and scared and dis-empowered. In general, that is not my habitual mindset, but after being seeped in that environment for 2 years, I am aware that it is becoming my mindset and I do not want that. I don’t want to be creating an angry dis-empowered life. Every morning I decide that I am going to remain positive and it doesn’t take long to find myself angry and resentful. I find myself standing in the med room, or hiding in the bathroom (my 2 favorite retreats) wondering how it is that I have gotten into this head

space and how I turn it around.

Each of these books offers very similar advice: mindfulness practice. Marking out time every day to practice intentional thought – either mindfully watching your thoughts to build awareness, or concentrated focus on intentional ideas and thoughts you want to manifest. I say to myself, that’s a good idea. I am totally going to do that. Well… here we are a year later and I am still not doing that. Over and over my gut says, “You should really do that, my head goes, yup great idea,” and then I find myself on facebook or words with friends zoning out and being the opposite of intentional.

This year I want to truly manifest the practice I have been dreaming about for years. I have re-built the website to reflect my new skills and the additional services I want to offer. I have a brand new brochure. I am headed back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner so I can fully do the work I want to do. So this year, I am going to use myself as a model. How do I hone my intention? How do I become more disciplined and how do I create the life I want to be living? I will bring you all along with me. I invite you to join me.

Starting in February I am going to offer a self care boot camp class (name is still in the envisioning process so stay tuned. Part of that class will be about building mindfulness. I hope to see you there.
